Re: Silverbill in Hawaii... "African" or "Indian"?
I went through the Hawaiian Silverbill drill several years ago. Some notes are below. In my opinion, your best choice is African Silverbill. The African Silverbill does show up in my 3.52 when using the AOU Hawaii checklist.
BD's Clement's and formerly Wells Taxonomy use:
The African Silverbill = Euodice cantans
Indian Silverbill = White-throated muna = Euodice malabarica
Hawaii Audubon Society uses: Warbling Silverbill = Lonchura malabarica (cantans)
Dr Pratt, the default expert: Warbling Silverbill = Lonchura malabarica
Other opinions: White-rumped Silverbill: Lonchura malabarica
African Silverbill Lonchura cantans
AOU Check-list Supplement: Re: Lonchura cantans:
Notes.—Formerly included with Lonchura malabarica
and together called Warbling Silverbill. Hawaiian
records were erroneously assigned to L. malabarica in
7th edition.
Pete Thayer quote: Fall 2000: "Changed common name of Warbling Silverbill to Indian Silverbill (Lonchura malabarica). · Added African Silverbill (Lonchura cantans). · Sightings for Warbling Silverbill changed to Indian Silverbill.
"If you have Indian Silverbill sightings in Africa, Hawaii, or Florida, change to African Silverbill."
You'll have to make your call on your research.
Good luck, Dr Al Ahlgrim
